Job Detail: Tooling Designer

Walker Elliott has partnered with our client, a long-established manufacturer in the Arlington, Texas area is adding a Tool Designer II to its team.

This is a genuine design position, not a detailing role. You will own complex molds, fixtures, and tools from concept through fabrication - checking your own designs for form, fit, and function, quoting the work out to vendors, inspecting what comes back, and making the call on whether it gets accepted or reworked. You will also design, build, and train the team on the process and control systems that support production.

Just as importantly, you will not be boxed into a CAD cube. This group expects its designer to be out on the floor with machinists and production personnel, troubleshooting processes and making sure the tooling actually works in the hands of the people running it.

There is no degree requirement here. This role is built for someone who came up through the trade — a tool and die maker, mold maker, or machinist who moved into design and can defend every dimension on the print.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Design and detail complex molds, fixtures, and tools using SolidWorks and AutoCAD

• Check mold designs and product drawings for form, fit, and function

• Troubleshoot production processes on the floor

• Work directly with machine shop and production personnel to ensure proper tooling fit and usage

• Prepare quote requests and select vendors

• Inspect received tooling and compare measurements against design drawings

• Determine disposition of discrepant tooling and oversee rework

• Design, build, and train employees on process and control systems

• Develop safety and process procedures and assist in training employees on their use

• Apply mathematical formulas - primarily trigonometry - to confirm design requirements and material properties

• Coordinate work schedules and produce progress reports

• Provide technical support to the engineering and manufacturing departments

REQUIREMENTS

• High school diploma or equivalent

• 5+ years in tooling or mechanical design

• 4+ years using CAD software in a machine shop environment

• 2+ years with SolidWorks modeling software or equivalent 3D CAD

• Working knowledge of steel material properties and fabrication practices

• Solid applied math skills, primarily trigonometry

• Ability to interpret and clearly describe technical information

• Comprehensive computer skills, including Word and Excel

• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to follow verbal instructions

• Willingness to work overtime when needed
