Description:
Development Manager
The Woodlands, TX (remote now, 2-3 days per week starting 2027)
Our client, a software company operating in the logistics space, is seeking an experienced Development Manager to lead their .NET development team. This role oversees a portfolio of 8-12 interconnected applications that all tie into a shared database, supporting core business operations. The ideal candidate is technically strong, hands-on with modern development practices, and comfortable managing a distributed, work-from-home team while keeping projects, priorities, and people moving forward.
This is not a coding role, but it does require enough technical depth to review code, understand system architecture, and speak credibly with developers about why something is or isn't working. You'll be the driving force behind the team's execution: setting priorities, holding people accountable, and stepping in to problem-solve and troubleshoot when things get stuck. The team also uses AI tooling (built on Claude) for internal knowledge management and development support, so comfort working alongside and helping the team leverage these tools is a plus.
Responsibilities
-
Manage and lead the .NET development team, setting clear priorities and holding team members accountable for deliverables and deadlines.
-
Oversee a portfolio of 8-12 applications built on the .NET stack, all integrated with a shared SQL Server database.
-
Review code and understand system behavior deeply enough to guide technical discussions, troubleshoot issues, and make informed decisions, without hands-on coding responsibility.
-
Maintain visibility into the team's DevOps systems, tickets, and day-to-day work to stay current on project status and emerging issues.
-
Enforce and maintain established UI standards across applications, including legacy PowerBuilder applications still in use.
-
Support the team's use of AI-assisted tools (built on Claude) for internal knowledge base and development workflows.
-
Manage a remote/work-from-home team, ensuring consistent communication, engagement, and accountability despite the distributed setup.
-
Proactively identify and resolve technical and operational roadblocks, escalating and driving resolution as needed.
-
Partner closely with the Operations Manager to align technical priorities with business needs.
-
Learn the rail logistics business in depth to make informed prioritization and technical decisions that support operational goals.
Requirements
-
7+ years of relevant experience, including hands-on technical experience with the .NET stack, SQL Server, and Azure.
-
Prior people management experience, with a demonstrated ability to hold a technical team accountable to deadlines and standards.
-
Strong technical proficiency, able to review code, understand application architecture, and engage credibly in technical conversations with developers.
-
Experience working within DevOps environments, including ticketing systems and workflow tracking.
-
Comfortable managing multiple applications/projects simultaneously, particularly systems that share a common database.
-
Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to dig in and drive resolution independently.
-
Experience or willingness to work with legacy technologies (PowerBuilder) alongside modern .NET development.
-
Self-starter mentality with an aggressive, proactive approach to staying on top of team output and project status.
-
Willingness and ability to learn the rail logistics industry and apply that knowledge to prioritization and decision-making.
-
Experience managing remote/distributed teams preferred.
