Walker Elliott is recruiting for a Sr. Product Development Chemist to become the Technical lead for a consumer products company with worldwide appeal.


The Chemist will be responsible for conducting basic and applied research on raw materials that will enhance the quality characteristics of ignition and burn performance of fire logs.


Investigate the effects of the raw materials and processing conditions on the properties.


Improve current formulas and provide innovative products to the marketplace.


The position requires hands-on lab analysis of natural and or petroleum-based paraffinic waxes, oils, cellulosic fibers, charcoal fines, liquid fuels, and pilot and scale-up trials with multiple manufacturing sites.



  • Research, explore, and test new materials for the consumer products manufacturing.

  • Identify and evaluate alternative processes or raw materials that may improve performance of Duraflame products.

  • Perform chemical analysis and physical property testing of materials and products.

  • Conduct research into identification of alternative formulations/raw materials to generate product cost savings and improve process efficiencies.

  • Supervise and direct laboratory technicians and other personnel in conducting research and testing.

  • Be prepared to travel as necessary to all manufacturing sites, suppliers and customers as directed, to provide technical support to maintain continuity in product manufacture.

  • Monitor experiments and record results; prepare detailed reports both written and oral with conclusions and recommendations.

  • Assist with the supervision of staff and manage the department during the manager’s absence.

  • Provide training and mentorship to technical staff.

  • Other duties as assigned.



  • Ph.D. or Master’s degree in Chemistry or related field desired. A specialization in Organic Chemistry, Polymers, or Wood Fibers is preferred

  • Valid Driver’s License



  • 5+ years practical work experience in a production or research environment.

  • Project management and consumer products introduction experience is preferred.

  • This position requires travel, including but not limited to, travel to local and nonlocal company sites, training, etc.

  • This is a full-time position, with a minimum expectation of forty (40) hours per week. Dependent on workload, hours may be somewhat flexible, and some late evenings and weekends may be required.



  • Computer skills: Internet, e-mail, Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel (emphasis on Excel).

  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.

  • Good communication skills (both oral and written) in English.

  • Possess detailed development laboratory or pilot plant skills.

  • Strong technical, organizational, and presentation reporting skills.

  • Exceptional attention to detail, and high-performance standards.

  • Must have good mathematical aptitude.

  • Able to multitask, prioritize, and manage time effectively.
